Characteristics, Risk Factors, and Prevention of Myopia in China
Dr. Chen will present an overview of the myopia epidemic in China, including epidemiology and incidence among school students across different regions. She will discuss key risk factors such as genetics, outdoor time, digital screen use, and intensive early education. The talk will also cover community-based prevention strategies—including the “Wenzhou model” for screening and big data support—and current clinical interventions in China, such as Ortho-K lenses, defocus spectacle lenses, combo therapy with low-dose Atropine, etc.
BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Jie Chen is Dean of the School of Ophthalmology & Optometry and the Eye Hospital at Wenzhou Medical University (WMU), one of China’s leading centers for eye care, vision science, and myopia research. She earned her MD and PhD in pediatric ophthalmology from WMU.
Dr. Chen specializes in pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, amblyopia, and low vision rehabilitation. Her research has focused on myopia control and prevention, including the use of low-concentration atropine and environmental interventions in pediatric populations. She is also known for her work on early visual development, including a landmark study documenting the rapid integration of tactile and visual information in children shortly after congenital cataract surgery.
Dr. Chen has served as Principal Investigator on grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Lavelle Fund for the Blind (USA), and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals including Current Biology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, and Optometry and Vision Science. She is Secretary-General of the National Corps for Myopia Control and Prevention (Ministry of Education, China).
