Visual Dysfunction in Concussion: Going Beyond 20/20!

Patrick T. Quaid, BSc(Hons)Optom, MCOptom, FCOVD, PhD

In this presentation, Dr. Quaid will review both structural and functional correlations pertaining to common visual complaints post-concussion, such as photophobia, dizziness, tracking issues when reading, as well as difficulty coping with visually busy areas such as malls/grocery stores. A review of how visual, vestibular and proprioceptive information is combined in the brain to “see the world as cohesive,” and this will be done in addition to easy ways to screen for issues in a primary care setting. Triage of cases in a VT setting will also be discussed. Interventions will also be discussed, as well as a review of what the current research shows on such interventions and what the future holds in terms of objective metrics.

Dr. Quaid will show videos of real-life cases and review the literature, as he is a strong proponent of clinical translational research. He has often stated that “research endeavours must as much as possible directly benefit clinical care – the patient at the end of the day is the most important aspect to any equation”. Following the lecture, there will be a bonus 30-minute open Q&A session after a short break – bring your complex case questions and see if we can put mass brainpower together!
